Why EMET
From the Golem to the AI Agent
The legend of the golem describes one of humanity’s oldest ambitions: to create a helper that extends what people can do. Shaped from clay and brought to life by the word emet, meaning truth, the golem was built to protect and to serve. It was strong, tireless and obedient. It was also blind to context. It carried out instructions exactly, without grasping the intent behind them or the circumstances around them. In the end its makers had to stop it: erasing a single letter turned emet into met, meaning dead.
Capability without understanding rarely fails loudly. It fails obediently.
Artificial intelligence puts organisations in the same position. AI agents are now deployed to act, not only to answer: to run processes, make decisions and deal with people. Their capacity is real, and so is the gap. An agent that follows the literal instruction without reading the situation, the stakes or the people involved produces outcomes no one intended, at scale and at speed.
We believe the next advance in AI is not more capability but deeper understanding. Context and empathy are not soft features. They are what make collaboration between people and AI trustworthy. An agent that understands intent, knows the limits of its knowledge and keeps people in authority stops being a tool that needs constant supervision. It becomes a partner people can rely on.
This is the work of EMET. We design and test AI agents on three principles:
- Context before commandAgents that interpret intent and circumstance, not only instructions.
- Truth as foundationAgents that are open about what they know, what they don’t, and what they are.
- Human authorityPeople remain accountable, informed and able to step in at every stage.
We develop these practices as a living lab, applying them inside our own organisation before we bring them to others. Our aim is collaboration between people and AI that strengthens human judgement instead of replacing it, so that the technology we create serves humanity, and not the other way round.
